Thoughts on Weight Gain and ED Recovery (April 2019)

Let’s talk for a minute about eating disorder recovery and weight gain. I want to take some time to be open and honest about this— as I really don’t feel like we have enough safe spaces or opportunities to discuss this process in a real way. ED’s come in all different forms and functions, and can affect all different kinds of people. It’s not always obvious and it’s not always what media, social circles, or families make it out to be. I specifically want to touch on the topic of weight gain because it’s something I feel is shrouded in complex emotions, that often are at odds with the images and messages we get bombarded with daily. Going through this part of recovery often means dealing with a lot of guilt and shame, and is a really difficult time considering the ebbs and flows of whatever comes up. Including dealing with the fact that you have already spent so much time at odds with your body. It’s a time of contradiction, but also a lot of beauty and healing and learning to recognize your own magic and immense strength. I have found that my path through recovery has meant fully accepting whatever form my body may take as I learn to live in balance with myself. And literally TRUSTING my body completely. You haaave to learn how to trust yourself through recovery, and remember that we are seasonal beings, we flow through cycles and our bodies are ALWAYS changing. You are worth so much more than a number on a scale or what you think your body “should” look or feel like. Fat on your body exists to nourish and protect you. It will always exist. It will never go away. Stop being afraid of it, and check your own internalized fatphobia. WEIGHT GAIN IS OKAY. Weight gain does not determine your worth. You are fucking beautiful. We all exist as impeccable beings in this rainbow of humanity, we all exist in beauty, and we all have the opportunity to fall in love with ourselves however we are. Don’t be afraid of yourself or your natural body. Learn to love whatever comes and trust your process. Be patient with yourself. If you’re reading this, you’re on your way, love.
